--December is the first month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and of meteorological summer in the Southern Hemisphere. --Note that by tracking the latest hours in white, the overhead sun can be seen to move E to W on a daily basis. --Thunderstorms travel W to E over the middle and higher latitudes in both hemispheres, and E to W in the tropics. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is well defined just north of the equator over the Atlantic Ocean during much of the month. --Well-organized areas of thunderstorms move eastward from the E coasts of large land masses in the middle latitudes of North and South America, Africa, and Australia. --Almost no lightning occurs over the Sahara, except along the Mediterranean coast. --The Andes provide a sharp western boundary in a generally NNW-SSE line; no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. ~Ron Holle

(Cont) --The major islands of SE Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon due to sea breezes and along the slopes of mountain ranges, then move W onto adjacent oceans in the evening. --Most lightning over Australia tends to be organized, although the north coast has more frequent activity than inland. --In the southern portion of South America, clearing of lightning is apparent from south to north as cold fronts and attendant dry sinking air arrives to minimize lightning. --Sea breeze thunderstorms form on many days on the south coast of Liberia, Cote D’Ivoire, and Ghana where the equatorial trough extends over land. --Madagascar has frequent lightning activity every that usually stays on the island. ~Ron Holle

--01 to 03 December: A well-organized area of lightning is over the SW coast of Saudi Arabia and NW Yemen. --06 to11 December: Several active areas of lightning are over Scandinavia, Iceland, and the U.K. --06 to 12 December: Apparent frontal systems move SW to NE across Australia. --07 to 11 December: Two active lines of thunderstorms move SW to NE over Argentina, most likely associated with cold fronts. --07 to 15 December: Large thunderstorms move W to E over the north coasts of Libya and Egypt, then across the Middle East to Saudi Arabia. --08 to 10, and 23 to 28 December: Large cyclonic storms are nearly stationary over the North Atlantic west of Africa. --08 to 12, and 31 December: Large thunderstorms form over central and western India. The storms extend to the Himalayas on the 14 to 16th. --10 to 15 December: A large area of frequent lightning is apparent off the east coast of North America. --18 to 20 December: The east-west equatorial trough is intermittently apparent south of India. ~Ron H
