--August is the last month of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes are moving from W to E, while there is weaker motion from the E near the equator. --Traveling disturbances in the westerlies with lightning move quickly across Russia over long distances from WSW to ENE throughout the month. --The major islands and land areas of SE Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon due to sea breezes and along the slopes of mountain ranges. --Lightning is on the S side of the Himalayas over India every day; storms are typically stationary. --Very little lightning is present over the high plateau of western and north-central China. --Lightning forms over Japan every day during the first half of the month, and less often later in August. --Sea breeze storms form daily along the W and S coasts of Yemen and sometimes the W coast of Saudi Arabia. --Sea breeze storms form on many days along the NE coast of Oman and sometimes SE Iran. ~Ron Holle

--06 to 08 August: Typhoon Soudelor is apparent in curved bands of lightning as it moves from ESE to WNW across Taiwan and onward to China. --08 August: The farthest north August lightning is north of the New Siberian Islands. --13, 16, and 24 August: Clusters of lightning form over northern Pakistan and move south. --19 to 21 August: Typhoon Atsani is apparent in curved bands of lightning as it moves from ESE to WNW north of Borneo. ~Ron Holle
