--May is the last month of meteorological autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, and of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is intermittent over the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and South America, and diffuse over the Arabian Sea. --Daily afternoon thunderstorms near the equator move from the east-northeast over sub-Saharan Africa, but die when they reach the Atlantic coast. --Several autumn storms over the southern oceans move from west to east for long periods. --Several large-scale features have lightning during May over the Sahara south of the Mediterranean. --Afternoon thunderstorms form on many May days on both sides of the southern Red Sea. --Madagascar has minimal thunderstorm activity in May compared with previous months. ~Ron Holle
