--August is the latter part of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. --Although the most frequent direction of thunderstorm movement is from west to east, there are occasional periods from other directions. --There is a long period from the 24th to the 30th when Western Europe is nearly lightning-free. --The most significant thunderstorm activity over the U.K. is on the 15th. --Thunderstorms occur along the Mediterranean coast over the mountain ranges of Morocco and Algeria on many days starting on the 5th. --No lightning occurs during the entire month over Iceland. ~Ron Holle

--01-05; 20-22 August: Storms form over the Pyrenees and move NE over France or the Mediterranean. --05 to 06 August: Strong lightning activity forms along the western shore of Norway on both afternoons, then race northeastward to the Arctic Ocean and Barents Sea. --Last half of month: There is frequent almost daily lightning over eastern Turkey, Georgia, and Armenia. ~Ron Holle
