--July is the middle month of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. --Thunderstorms in tropical regions move from the E, while they move from the W in the southern portion of the map. --Every few days, a north-south line or cluster of storms becomes organized over East and Central Africa and moves steadily W or SW across the continent, then dissipates over the Eastern Atlantic. --July lightning over the equatorial portions of the continent is primarily between the equator and 20 N. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is sporadic between Guinea and northeast Brazil, and not identifiable over the Indian Ocean. --Complexes move W to E to the south of South Africa through the month. --Lightning over the Arabian Peninsula is mainly over Yemen and the Red Sea coast. --The Sahara has a few widely scattered thunderstorms. ~Ron Holle
