General --Most lightning near the equator over land is during the day. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is moderately well defined in an east-west alignment over the Eastern Pacific and western Atlantic Ocean. --Daily thunderstorms over Brazil often have a generally counter-clockwise pattern but individual storms do not travel far. --The Andes provide a sharp western boundary in a NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. --Several large storm complexes form over northern Argentina and Paraguay and move north or eastward. --The South Atlantic and South Pacific Oceans away from the continent are nearly lightning-free. Specific --01 to 04 and 18 to 20 October: Especially strong storms form over central Argentina and move north into Brazil. --11 to 13 October: Strong thunderstorms persist over Uruguay. --18 October: The farthest south lightning of the month occurs southeast of Ushuaia ~Ron Holle
