General --September is the first month of meteorological spring in the Southern Hemisphere. --Over all but the eastern tip of Brazil, daily thunderstorms form, then move from the east, then northeast over the western Amazon. Individual storms do not travel far or survive into the next day. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is well defined over the Eastern North Pacific and more sporadic over the Atlantic. --Organized thunderstorm complexes form often over Argentina later in the month, then move eastward. --The Andes provide a sharp western boundary in a NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. Specific --13 to 16 September: Thunderstorm complex forms over northern Argentina and extends eastward over the South Atlantic. --23 to 26 September: Series of large systems with different paths over Northern Argentina, Uruguay, and southern Brazil. ~Ron Holle
