--June is early summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and early winter in the Southern Hemisphere. --Note that by tracking the latest four hours in white, the overhead sun can be seen to move E to W on a daily basis. --Over the middle and higher latitudes in both hemispheres, systems are traveling W to E. --In the tropics near the equator, thunderstorms are stationary or move slowly to the W, while they move more from W to E to the north of the tropics. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, gradually becomes more organized during June in the Atlantic and east Pacific Oceans. --During most of June, a sharp WNW-ESE line of lightning forms in the afternoon at the base of the Himalayas over Nepal and northern India. These storms often move to the SE. --Daily storms develop over the highlands of Ethiopia and Sudan throughout the month. ~Ron Holle

--In Europe, there are many organized thunderstorms on the scale of the smaller countries that travel long distances for more than one day. --The major islands of SE Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon. On these islands, afternoon lightning forms due to sea breezes and along the slopes of mountain ranges, then often move onto nearby oceans. Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Borneo have significant lightning all month. --Frequent thunderstorms occur to the southeast of South Africa throughout the month, moving long distances from W to E. --Most of the Australian lightning is along the southern coast and offshore to the southeast. --Much of South America outside the tropical regions has minimal lightning during most of the month due to cooler and direr air arriving form the south. --Most of the Sahara and Saudi Arabia is without lightning during June. --Sea breeze thunderstorms form on both the N and S coasts of the Gulf of Oman every day of the month. ~Ron Holle

--The Pyrenees Mountains separating Spain from France are sometimes a boundary between storms on one side of the mountain range and the other side. --A large low is offshore to the west of Spain starting on the 18th. It slowly moves to the east until reaching the land mass of Spain on the 23rd through 25th and causes a blowup of lightning activity on those days. ~Ron Holle

--01 to 04 June: A well-organized low is circulating over Turkey and producing frequent lightning. --06 June: Lightning is detected north of Sweden and Norway north of the Arctic Circle. Such thunderstorms occur at this latitude in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres around and after the longest day of the year (in late June in the Northern Hemisphere). --07 to 10 June: Most of June’s lightning over the U.K. is during this period. --June 10 to 14: Thunderstorms form in sea breezes along the coasts and inland over the mountains of Morocco and Algeria; also on later days in the loop. --19 to 21 June: The farthest north lightning occurs in thunderstorms N of Russia above the Arctic Circle. At these high latitudes, storms move rapidly E, then SE. --24 to 29 and 29-30 June: Frequent lightning over NW China and SE Russia. ~Ron Holle
