--March is the first month of meteorological autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most lightning over land is during the day. --The Andes usually provide a sharp western boundary in a generally NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is often active over the Atlantic during much of the month, and occasionally noted over the Eastern Pacific. --Over interior regions of the Amazon basin, thunderstorms move from the E near the equator and from the NE farther south. --At higher latitudes to the south, storms generally move from W to E. --In the southern portion of the continent, frequent clearing of lightning is apparent from south to north as cold fronts and attendant sinking dry air arrive to minimize lightning. ~Ron Holle
