--April is late autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, and late spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --In the tropics, thunderstorms are typically stationary or move slowly to the W, while they move more rapidly from W to E at higher latitudes. --Much of the lightning is during the day. --The major islands of SE Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon. On these islands, afternoon lightning forms due to sea breezes and along the slopes of mountain ranges, then often move west onto the oceans. --Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Borneo have significant lightning all month. --Except during the middle of May, a sharp WNW-ESE line of lightning forms in the afternoon at the base of the Himalayas over Nepal and northern India. --Over Australia, the only significant lightning activity in the interior is during the middle of the month. The rest of the May lightning is offshore and occasionally on land near coasts. ~Ron Holle
