--July is the middle month of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes are moving from W to E, while there is weak motion from the E closer to the equator. --The major islands of SE Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon due to sea breezes and along the slopes of mountain ranges. --Lightning is on the S side of the Himalayas over India every day; storms often move toward the ESE. --Very little lightning is present over the high plateau of western China. --Thunderstorms form almost daily over the NE shore of the Black Sea and often move N to NE. --Sea breeze storms form daily along the W coasts of Yemen and sometimes Saudi Arabia. --A nearly stationary large area of lightning is over NE China and eastern Mongolia during the last half of the month. ~Ron Holle

--08 to 13 July: Typhoon Chan-Hom is associated with some curricular banding as it approaches Shanghai from the SE. --09 July: The farthest north July lightning is north of the New Siberian Islands. --10 to 12 July: A cyclonic circulation is apparent over NE India. --16, 22, and 25 July: Lightning extends north to the vicinity of Novaya Zemlya. --27 to 30 July: A very large nearly stationary cyclonic circulation is over south central Russia. --29 to 31 July: A cyclonic circulation is apparent over the northern Bay of Bengal. --26 July: A line of storms dives rapidly N to S over Pakistan. ~Ron Holle
