--April is the middle month of meteorological autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, and of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is intermittent over the Atlantic Ocean between Africa and South America, and diffuse over the Arabian Sea. --Afternoon thunderstorms near the equator move from the east-northeast over sub-Saharan Africa. --The northern edge of lightning activity has shifted to the north such that afternoon strikes in April are some distance inland from the coast of West Africa. --Several long-lasting thunderstorm systems are over Saudi Arabia and Yemen during April. --Madagascar has much weaker thunderstorm activity in April than in previous months. --Lightning is almost non-existent over the Sahara south of the Mediterranean. ~Ron Holle
