General --October is the middle month of meteorological autumn, and of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes move from west to east, while they move from varying directions in tropical regions. --The major islands and land areas of tropical Southeast Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon in sea breezes and along mountain slopes. Motion is from variable directions near the equator. --Thunderstorm activity over Australia is well organized, and steadily increases through the month. --The southern half of the Indian subcontinent has frequent lightning during the first half of October. Specific --09 to 11 October: A broad cyclonic circulation is over India. --18 to 22 October: Typhoon Lan has a long outer rainband circulation shown by lightning as it moves northeast of the Philippines. --26 to 27 October: Largest of several extensive lightning outbreaks over the population centers of southeast Australia. ~Ron Holle
