--December is the first month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere. --Nearly all December lightning over the United States is in well-organized lines and clusters. --The east-west aligned equatorial trough, the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is often well defined over the western North Atlantic and eastern North Pacific during the month. --Lightning in small amounts occurs in several episodes along the west coasts of Canada and Alaska in December. --Central America has minimal lightning throughout the month. ~Ron Holle

--01 to 05 and 16 to 20 December: Frequent lightning in the vicinity of Hawaii. --04 to 08 December: Large extratropical cyclonic circulation northeast of Bermuda. --20 December: Long line of lightning off Mexico in moisture plume extends from SW to NE toward southwest United States. --27 to 30 December: Long lines of frequent lightning over southeast United States extend offshore to over the Atlantic Ocean. ~Ron Holle
