--January is the middle month of meteorological winter in the Northern Hemisphere, and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes are moving from W to E, while there is weak motion near the equator. --The major islands of SE Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon due to sea breezes and along the slopes of mountain ranges. --Much of the lightning over Australia tends to be organized, although the northwest coast has more frequent activity than inland. --Storms form almost daily over the Cape York Peninsula of Australia. --01 to 03 January: Most of the month’s lightning over India occurs during this period. --01 to 05 January: Major cyclonic storm moves W to E from southern Japan. --07 to 09 January: Long lines of lightning W to E across southern Australia coast. --20 to 21 January: Strong isolated thunderstorm moves S to N from central Australia. ~Ron Holle
