--May is the last month of meteorological spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. --Thunderstorms in tropical regions move from the E, while they move from the W in the southern and northern portions of the map. --Storms form daily during daylight hours over East and Central Africa, and move to the W or SW. --May lightning over the African continent is primarily between 20 N and 10 S. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is intermittent between Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil, and adjacent offshore areas. It is also intermittent over the Indian Ocean --Lightning is frequent and widespread over the Arabian Peninsula through much of May. --The northern Gulf of Guinea has nearly continuous lightning that arrives from the east or east-northeast from the continent. --Thunderstorm activity over Madagascar has sharply reduced since April, while the Sahara has intermittent lightning. ~Ron Holle

--01 to 07, 22 to 24, and 29 to 31 May: Daily lightning over Moroccan and Algerian mountains and coast. --07 to 09 May: Strong thunderstorm complex moves W to E across South Africa. --11 to 16 May: Widespread afternoon storms over the Horn of Africa south of the Gulf of Aden. --22 to 26 May: Equatorial trough is especially well defined over the Indian Ocean. --23 to 31 May: Daily sea breeze thunderstorms on the coasts of the Red Sea, especially over Saudi Arabia. ~Ron Holle
