General --March is the first month of meteorological spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --Lightning activity in the first part of March over the U.S., Cuba, and Mexico is primarily over the U.S. Gulf Coast. As March progress, organized storm systems develop in the Southern Plains and move eastward. --Canada and Alaska have almost no lightning in March. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is well defined and continuous between Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil; the trough is weak and often has a double structure over eastern North Pacific. --Central American lightning is sparse during March. Specific --05-07 March: Frequent lightning enters U.S. west coast. --09 March: Double equatorial trough is well defined in Pacific. --09-10 and 13-16 March: Major squall lines form in southern Plains and move E across U.S. --16 to 18 and 27 to 29 March: Large cyclonic circulations north of Hawaii are strongest of month. --27-30 March: Organized convection moves W to E from Florida across Bahamas. ~Ron Holle
