--May is the last month of meteorological autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most lightning over land is during the day. --The Andes usually provide a sharp western boundary in a generally NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is mainly active over the eastern Atlantic, and in a broad disorganized area over the Eastern Pacific. --Frequent lightning is over Panama, adjacent regions of Colombia, and offshore to the west. --03 to 05 May: A strong line of thunderstorms forms over central Argentina and moves far to the N, bringing drier air to nearly eliminate lightning in southern Brazil before dissipating. --10 to 12 May: Another large area of thunderstorms moves NE from Paraguay. --17 to 19 and 22 to 25 May: The eastern Amazon is remarkably free of lightning. ~Ron Holle
