--September is the first month of meteorological autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. --Nearly all lightning is moving from E to W, except to the northeast late in the month. --Most lightning over land is during the day, then activity extends to the W over the oceans in many locations during the evening and nighttime hours. --Storms form on most days over Florida, Cuba, Hispaniola, and the eastern shores of Central American countries. --The Caribbean Sea is usually a lightning minimum, due to 1) strong easterly winds, and 2) subsidence from land areas on all sides. --22-23 September: A major lightning enhancement occurs from Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula south to Central America, slowly moving west. --28-30 September: An apparent frontal boundary and upper trough east of Florida result in an east-west line of lightning. ~Ron Holle
