--October is the middle month of meteorological autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, and of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes move from west to east, while they move from varying directions in tropical regions. --The major islands and land areas of tropical Southeast Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon due to sea breezes and along mountain slopes. --Lightning forms daily over the Lake Victoria area of Africa and moves west. --Lightning activity over Australia, southern Africa, and Madagascar steadily increases after the middle of the month. --Several organized thunderstorm complexes form over South Africa and move eastward throughout the month. --The Indian subcontinent, China, and southern Red Sea have frequent lightning in the first half of October, then minimal activity for the rest of the month. ~Ron Holle
