--September is the first month of meteorological autumn in the Northern Hemisphere. --September lightning is dominated by the diurnal cycle that has most activity during afternoons. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes move from west to east, while they move from varying directions in tropical regions. --The major islands and land areas of tropical Southeast Asia have thunderstorms nearly every afternoon in sea breezes and along mountain slopes. Motion is generally from east to west near the equator. --Thunderstorms form to the south and north of the Himalayas until late in the month. --Most of the Indian subcontinent has frequent lightning throughout September. --Japan has frequent lightning throughout the month as strong systems arrive from the west. --Thunderstorms gradually decrease from north to south through the month over Russia and China. ~Ron Holle
