Lightning Animations (492 videos)

--February is the last month of meteorological summer in the Southern Hemisphere. --The Andes provide a sharp western boundary in a generally NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. --Over interior regions of the Amazon basin, thunderstorms move from the E near the equator, and from the NE farther south. --In the southern portion of the continent, frequent clearing of lightning is apparent from south to north as cold fronts and attendant sinking dry air arrive to minimize lightning. --Almost no lightning occurs over the eastern tip of Brazil until later in the month. --05 and 18 February: The farthest south storms of the month occur SE of the southern tip of South America, close to Antarctica. --08 to 10 February: An area of lightning persists quite far south in the South Pacific. --18 to 20 February: A strong line of thunderstorms forms over southern Argentina and moves north to the Amazon, then dissipates. ~Ron Holle
