General --July is the middle month of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere. --Lightning activity over the U.S. is often in large organized systems that begin in the northern Rocky Mountains and move to the E. --Canada has widespread lightning in July; Alaska activity is mostly in the south and east. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is intermittent between Africa and northeast Brazil; the trough over the eastern North Pacific is active. --Frequent lightning occurs over the mountainous western U.S. --Mexican lightning is frequent in the monsoon region of its northwest. --Central America, Cuba, and Florida have active daily thunderstorms during July. Specific --09 to 15 July: Hurricane Barry slowly moves N onto Louisiana coast. --21 to 24 July: Stationary low NW of Hawaii. --23 to 25 July: Long line of thunderstorms along cold front from New England to Texas, moving S into Gulf of Mexico. --24 to 26 July: Lightning along north coast of Alaska. ~Ron Holle
