General --October is the middle month of meteorological autumn, and of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --Most thunderstorms at higher latitudes move from west to east, while they move from east to west in tropical regions. --Thunderstorm activity over Africa spreads steadily southward through the month. --The equatorial trough is moderate to well-developed over the western Atlantic offshore of West Africa all month. --Storms form in East Africa near the equator every few days and move westward. --Most of the Sahara is free of lightning during October. --Daily thunderstorms are over Morocco during the first half of the month. Specific --16 to 19 October: Large organized lightning area starts south of South Africa and moves eastward over the Indian Ocean. --29 to 31 October: Strong concentration of lightning along southwest coast of Africa. ~Ron Holle
