Northern Hemisphere --Numerous squall lines and frontal boundaries with enormous lightning frequencies occur over the central and southern United States. --Several large long-lasting cyclonic circulations persist during May over much of Europe and dominate lightning activity. On their north sides, active thunderstorms are moving from east to west over long distances. --India has frequent lightning in varying configurations during May. --Eastern China has frequent thunderstorms traveling from west-northwest to east-southeast throughout the month. ~Ron Holle

Tropics --The east-west equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is better defined over the eastern North Pacific Ocean than over the western Atlantic, western Pacific and Indian Oceans. --The major islands and land areas of Southeast Asia have thunderstorms on most afternoons due to sea breezes and along mountain slopes. --Daily thunderstorms over northern Brazil move from the east but individual storms do not travel far. --Central America has frequent lightning during most of the month. ~Ron Holle

Southern Hemisphere --The Andes provide a sharp western boundary in a NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. --Several autumn storms over the southern oceans move from west to east for long periods. --Thunderstorm activity over the southern half of Brazil and to the south is intermittent. --Australia has weak thunderstorm activity during May. ~Ron Holle

--02 to 03 May: Especially active east-west line of lightning moves across southeast China. --03 to 07 May: Long lines of thunderstorms are along a northeast-southwest trough across the southeast United States that drifts into the Caribbean as far south as Hispaniola. --05 to 09 May: An organized thunderstorm complex moves from Portugal eastward across most of the Mediterranean. --07 to 09 May; Stationary lightning-producing cyclonic circulation over western United States. --08 to 11 May: A very large stationary cyclonic circulation is centered over Hungary. --10 to 14 May: Thunderstorm complex over southern Pacific moves west to east and becomes the major storm over northern Argentina a few days later. --15 to 17 and 21 to 23 May: Strong storms over northern Argentina and Uruguay extend to the east over the Atlantic. ~Ron Holle

--18 to 20 May: A well-organized storm moves from southwest to northeast to the south of South Africa. --18 to 21 May: Tropical Cyclone Roanu moves south to north along the east coast of India. Very heavy rainfall and flood-related loss of life occur in Sri Lanka. --21 to 22 May: An organized squall line races northwest to southeast across eastern India. --24 to 29 May: A large cyclonic circulation centered over Romania slowly drifts eastward. ~Ron Holle
