--April is the middle month of meteorological spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. --Thunderstorms in tropical regions move from the E, while they move from the W in the southern and northern portions of the map. --Storms form daily during daylight hours over East and Central Africa, and move to the W or SW. --April lightning usually has a northern extent near 15 N over the continent. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is well defined and continuous between Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil, and adjacent offshore areas. --The Gulf of Guinea has nearly continuous lightning that arrives from the east or east-northeast from the continent. --Thunderstorm activity is present every day over Madagascar, while the Sahara is usually devoid of lightning. --The Mediterranean Sea has thunderstorm systems moving from W to E throughout the month. ~Ron Holle

--01 to 16 April: First of several major north-south squall lines travel E to W from Sudan across Cameroon to Gulf of Guinea. --02 to 04 April: Long line of lightning persists over Mauritania. --09 to 13 April: Especially widespread thunderstorms over Arabian Peninsula. --20 to 21 April: Strong thunderstorm complex south of South Africa. --22 to 27 April: Tropical Cyclone Kenneth moves E to W across northern tip of Madagascar and into Mozambique; major damage on 26th in Mozambique. ~Ron Holle
