General --October is the middle month of meteorological spring in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most lightning near the equator is over land and during the day as shown by the pulsing of white colors. --Over all but the eastern tip of Brazil, daily thunderstorms form, then move from the east or northeast. Individual storms do not travel far or survive into the next day. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is well defined over the Atlantic and more sporadic over the Eastern North Pacific. --Central American lightning is frequent in early October, then slowly decreases. --The Andes provide a sharp western boundary in a NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. Specific --09 to 10 October: Long line of lightning extends eastward from Argentina and moves offshore to the NE. --19 to 20 October: Thunderstorm complex forms in southeast Brazil and mores to the NE. ~Ron Holle
