--May is the last month of meteorological spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. --In tropical regions, thunderstorms primarily move from east-northeast to west-southwest. --Lightning activity moves from west to east over the southern portion of the map. --Lightning typically occurs during daylight hours over Africa. --The southern boundary of thunderstorms over Africa steadily shifts northward during May. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is often well defined between Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil. The trough is more diffuse over the Indian Ocean. --Storms develop on many May days over Ethiopia and move to the west-southwest. --Madagascar has thunderstorms on only a few days in May, and the Sahara and South Atlantic are nearly free of lightning. --Extensive lightning occurs over Saudi Arabia, including the southern Red Sea coastline into Yemen. --The Mediterranean coasts of Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia have thunderstorms on many days in May. ~Ron Holle
