General --June is the first month of meteorological winter in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most lightning near the equator is over land and during the day as shown by pulsing of white colors. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is intermittent in an east-northeast/west-southwest alignment over the Atlantic and Eastern North Pacific Oceans. --Tropical lightning activity is mostly north of 10 degrees south latitude in June. --Over Brazil, daily thunderstorms over the northern portion of the country move from the east. Individual storms do not travel far or survive into the next day. --Minimal lightning occurs over the Andes; only a few storms form over Uruguay in June. Specific --11 to 14 June and subsequent days: Thunderstorms form over Uruguay and move eastward. --22 to 25 and 27 to 29 June: Large systems move steadily from the west over the South Atlantic. ~Ron Holle
