General --October is the middle month of meteorological autumn in the Northern Hemisphere, and of spring in the Southern Hemisphere. --Thunderstorms in tropical regions move from the east, while they move from the west in the southern and northern portions of the map. --Lightning typically occurs during daylight hours over Africa. --Every few days, a larger organized system develops near Ethiopia and moves westward to the west coast of Africa; these systems sometimes become tropical waves over the Atlantic. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is often well defined between Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil. The trough is not identifiable over the Indian Ocean. --Thunderstorm activity is sporadic over Madagascar throughout the month, but decreases over the Sahara. --Lightning occurs on many days occurs along the southern and central Red Sea coastlines to the east over Yemen and Saudi Arabia, and to the west over Eritrea and Sudan. --The South Atlantic is usually free of lightning. ~Ron Holle
