--May is the last month of meteorological autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. --Over Brazil, thunderstorms form daily, then move from the E. Individual storms do not travel far or survive into the next day. --Lightning over Brazil steadily decreases from S to N through May. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic is intermittent between Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil. --The Andes define a sharp western boundary in a NNW-SSE line and no lightning occurs over the cold water offshore of the Andes. --Central American has very active thunderstorms during May. --04 to 06 May: Thunderstorm moves W to E across southern coast of Chile. --06 to 11 and 28 to 30 May: Large convective systems form over Paraguay and northern Argentina. --06 to 12 May: Sporadic lightning over South Atlantic at 60 degrees south, moving W to E. --12 to 15 May: Lightning clears from south to north across most of South America. ~Ron Holle
