General --July is the middle month of meteorological winter in the Southern Hemisphere. --Most lightning near the equator is over land and during the day as shown by pulsing of white colors. --Tropical lightning is mostly north of 5 degrees south latitude in July. --Over Brazil, intermittent daily thunderstorms over the northern portion of the country, including the coastline, move from the east. Individual storms do not travel far or survive into the next day. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is well-defined over Eastern North Pacific but very weak over the Atlantic. --Minimal lightning occurs over the Andes; only a few storms initiate over Uruguay in July. Specific --03 to 08 July: Large systems move steadily from the west over the South Pacific and South Atlantic Oceans. --18 to 21 July: Thunderstorms persist over northeast Argentina and Uruguay, and move eastward. --29 to 31 July: Elongated thunderstorm system forms over southeast Brazil. ~Ron Holle
