--August is the last month of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere, and of winter in the Southern Hemisphere. --Thunderstorms in tropical regions move from the east, while they move from the west in the southern portion of the map. --Every few days, a squall line develops near Ethiopia and moves westward to the west coast of Africa; these systems often become tropical waves over the Atlantic. --The equatorial trough over the Atlantic strengthens during August between the Ivory Coast and northeast Brazil. The trough is not identifiable over the Indian Ocean. --Long lines of thunderstorms move west to east over the Southern Indian Ocean off South Africa. --Scattered thunderstorms occur over much of the Sahara during the month. --Madagascar and the South Atlantic are usually free of lightning. --Daily lightning occurs along the southern and central Red Sea coastlines to the east over Yemen and Saudi Arabia, and to the west over Eritrea and Sudan. ~Ron Holle
