--May is the last month of meteorological autumn in the Southern Hemisphere, and of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. --The equatorial trough, also called the Intertropical Convergence Zone, is best defined near the equator over the Atlantic Ocean west of Africa earlier in the month. --Afternoon thunderstorms form daily over sub-Saharan Africa in a rather narrow swath within 10 degrees of the equator. They tend to move W. --Afternoon storms form almost daily over the coast of Somalia.. --04 to 06 May: Frequent lightning over the southwest half of Saudi Arabia, extending to the NE. --09 to 15 May: Storms move W to E from southern Turkey to the Middle East. --09 to 18 May: Several clusters move SW to NE offshore from southern South Africa; weaker complexes occur at other times. --18 to 30 May: Daily storms grow over Morocco and sometimes Algeria. --27 to 30 May: A well-organized line of lightning develops over southern Sudan and can be tracked as far west as Ghana. ~Ron Holle
